September is Literacy Month in Wilkinson County Schools!

Reading is the key to learning across every subject and an important part of our district’s work to increase student achievement. Throughout the year, our schools monitor students’ reading growth and use that information to provide additional support, enrichment, and opportunities for students to engage with high-interest texts.

This work extends beyond the classroom. Through district initiatives and community partnerships, Wilkinson County students and families have access to additional tools and resources that support literacy development.

Our literacy supports include:

• Ferst Readers, in partnership with Family Connection,

  , which helps encourage early literacy and the development of home libraries for young children and their families.

• The PLAY Card

  , which connects students with resources available through Georgia’s public library system and helps make reading and learning materials more accessible.

• Georgia Early Literacy Grant support for grades K–3, which provides additional opportunities to strengthen foundational reading skills during the early elementary years.

Families are essential partners in this work. Reading together, discussing a story, learning new words, writing for fun, or simply talking about the school day can help students strengthen the skills they use in the classroom and beyond.

Throughout September, we will share family literacy tips, highlight these initiatives and partnerships, and celebrate literacy activities happening across our schools.
