Wilkinson County Board of Education Announces Public Hearings on Intent to Opt Out of House Bill 581

Irwinton, GA – The Wilkinson County Board of Education (WCBOE) intends to opt out of House Bill (HB) 581, also known as the Floating Homestead Exemption Act, for the Wilkinson County School District. In an effort to ensure transparency and provide an opportunity for public input, WCBOE invites all community members to participate in upcoming public hearings.

Wilkinson County Board of Education Announces Public Hearings on Intent to Opt Out of House Bill 581 – The Floating Homestead Exemption Act

Irwinton, GA – The Wilkinson County Board of Education (WCBOE) intends to opt out of House Bill (HB) 581, also known as the Floating Homestead Exemption Act, for the Wilkinson County School District. In an effort to ensure transparency and provide an opportunity for public input, WCBOE invites all community members to participate in upcoming public hearings.

The hearings will be held at the Wilkinson County High School Auditorium, located at 11471 GA Hwy 57, Irwinton, GA, on the following dates and times:

  • February 10, 2025 – 9:30 AM
  • February 10, 2025 – 5:30 PM
  • February 17, 2025 – 6:00 PM

Please note that the first two meetings have been scheduled on the same date as the meeting regarding millage rates, minimizing the need for citizens to make multiple trips on different days. Community members who wish to provide input must sign in upon arrival and will have three (3) minutes to speak.

WCBOE encourages all residents to attend and share their perspectives on this matter. Public participation is welcomed and valued as we navigate decisions that impact our schools and community.

A final vote will take place during a Called Board Meeting on February 18, 2025 at 10:00 AM at the Wilkinson County Board of Education Board Room, located at 197 W Main Street, Irwinton, GA 31042.

The Wilkinson County Board of Education has proposed a 9.14% increase in the 2024 millage rate, resulting in a new rate of 18.750 mills. This marks a reduction from the current rate of 19.681 mills but is an increase above the proposed rollback rate. Citizens are invited to participate in public hearings regarding this tax increase, scheduled for January 31 and February 10, 2025, at the Wilkinson County Schools Auditorium in Irwinton, GA.

The Wilkinson County Board of Education has tentatively adopted a 2024 millage rate which will require an increase in property tax by 9.14 percent.

All concerned citizens are invited to the public hearing on the tax increase to be held at the Wilkinson County Schools Auditorium, 11471 Ga. Hwy. 57, Irwinton, GA 31042, on January 31, 2025, at 10:00 A.M.

Times and places of additional public hearings on this tax increase are at the Wilkinson County Schools Auditorium, 11471 Ga. Hwy. 57, Irwinton, GA 31042, on February 10, 2025, at 10:00 A.M and 6:00 P.M.

This tentative increase will result in a millage rate of 18.750 mills, a decrease of 0.931 mills from the current millage rate of 19.681 mills and an increase of 1.571 mills above the proposed rollback rate of 17.179. Without this tentative increase, the millage rate will be no more than 17.179 mills. The proposed tax increase for a home with a fair market value of $125,000 is approximately $78.55 per year and the proposed tax increase for non-homestead property with a fair market value of $100,000 is approximately $62.84 per year.

As September comes to a close, Wilkinson County Schools proudly acknowledges the generous donation of art materials from Keris Kares. This special contribution was made to the school’s Art Teacher, Ms. Hannah Grube, in support of her efforts to inspire creativity in her students. The donation, made during Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, highlights Keris Kares' commitment to fostering educational growth while raising awareness for pediatric cancer through their #GoGold movement.

The art materials provided by Keris Kares will enrich the learning experience for students, offering them the opportunity to explore their artistic talents and express themselves through creative projects. This donation is more than just a box of supplies—it is a resource that will help students grow and develop their skills in a positive and encouraging environment.

Keris Kares, a foundation dedicated to supporting families affected by pediatric cancer, was established to honor the memory of Keris, a brave child who fought against the disease. This recognition comes at a fitting time, as we celebrate Literacy Month, spotlighting the importance of reading and literacy in academic success.

These exceptional students have shown tremendous growth and dedication to improving their reading skills, demonstrating a commitment to excellence that serves as an example for their peers. From elementary to high school, our Lexile Leaders have raised the bar in literacy achievement.
