An Education Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (E-SPLOST) is a one-cent sales tax that lasts a maximum of five years or until the established cap is reached. Legislation enacted in 1985 allows school districts the option to ask voters for the ability to levy and collect a one percent sales tax to help fund school improvements. It can be used to pay for capital projects or to retire debt, but cannot be used to pay government operating expenses, such as salaries.
A continuation of the E-SPLOST will provide funds to improve safety and security, facilities, technology, and transportation. Overall the funds would be used to create safer and better learning environments.
The proposed projects include:
- A modern, safe, and secure Middle/High School that will allow students to have a seamless transition from middle school to high school
-
A new comprehensive Career, Technical and Agricultural Education Program Academy (Business, Computer/Technology, Construction, Mechanics, Cosmetology, Health Science)
-
A new Air Force Junior Reserve Officer Training Corp facility
-
Students in grades 6-12 will be housed at the Old Wilkinson County Primary-Elementary School during construction
This will give every child in the Wilkinson County School District an exceptional opportunity for success and positive experiences.
The special election vote will be on March 16, 2021. Early voting is offered February 22 - March 12, 2021, at the courthouse. More information will be made available during the information sessions this week and next week and in the link below.
